WHEN IS eid?

Eid al-Fitr 2020 in India will begin in the evening of Saturday, 23 May and ends in the evening of Sunday, 24 May Dates may vary
The exact date is never certain far in advance, as religious authorities in various countries rely on the sighting of the Eid crescent moon to announce when it will officially begin. It can be delayed by a day if the sky is too bright when the moon is out, or if clouds obstruct it. This is also the reason Ramadan can start on different days in different parts of the world.

WHAT IS EID?

  • Eid al-Fitr also called the "Festival of Breaking the Fast" means “recurring happiness or “festivity.
  • Eid al-Fitr is an important Islamic holiday observed by Muslims across the world. It is observed with celebrations and prayers. Muslims come together to share and enjoy the blessings of God during this festive occasion. The Eid is all about families celebrating together and praying to Allah. Eid is celebrated after Ramadan and is also based on the lunar calendar.
  • After 30 days of fasting, Eid al-Fitr is celebrated to break the fast and enjoy the festivities. It is not allowed to fast during Eid. Different countries celebrate Eid in their own way.
  • Muslims will start their Eid celebration by waking up early and performing morning prayer. Before going to the mosque to pray, Muslims eat dates. They perform zakat (charity) to purify any indecent acts or speech they did during fasting. Then, Muslims will offer their Salat al-Fitr or Eid prayers. This is mandatory and should be performed in groups, usually held in mosques.
  • The celebration is not complete without greeting relatives, family, and friends during the celebration. Muslims enjoy delicacies and food served during Eid and exchange gifts. It can last for up to 3 days while in some countries, it can last up to 4 days. In some countries, it is a practice for Elders to give money to children and Muslims will also exchange Eid greetings to families and even strangers.
  • To celebrate Eid al-Fitr, Muslims will perform a ritual of cleaning their body before offering some morning prayers. They will wear fine clothes and decorate their hands with henna. Most Muslims wear traditional dress during this day.

WHY IS EID-AL-FITR CELEBRATED?

Eid-al-Fitr is regarded as a time to celebrate, with Muslims gathering their friends and family to show gratitude toward God following the previous month of reflection. The holiday serves as a great reminder for Muslims to be grateful for what they have, and to share with those who may be less fortunate.

PROCEDURE OF PRAYING

SHIA PROCEDURE:

According to Shi'a jurisprudence performing this prayer in jama'a (congregationally) is wajib (compulsory) during the time that an infallible Imam is present and is mustahab (recommended) during the time of occultation. Eid prayer consists of two rak'as. After Sura al-Fatiha in each rak'a another sura from the Qur'an is recited; however, it is better to read Sura al-Shams in the former and Sura al-Ghashiya in the latter or Sura al-A'la and Surat al-Shams respectively. After reciting sura in the first rak'a, there are five takbirs followed by five qunuts and in the second rak'a, four takbirs with four qunuts. Any supplications or prayers will suffice in the qunuts, like the other prayer, but it is better to read a special supplication.

SUNNI PROCEDURE:

The prayer begins with the first Takbeer i.e. Takbeeratul-Ihraam followed by Thana.

The Imam will then pronounce three additional Takbeers and everyone will raise hands and then drop them by the side. At the pronouncement of the fourth Takbeer the congregation will fold their hands and the Imam will then complete the Rak'ah as normal after reciting Surah Al-Fatiha and another Surah.

In the second Rak'aat the Imam will recite Surah Al-Fatiha and another Surah and then pronounce three additional Takbeers and everyone will raise hands and then drop them by the side. At the pronouncement of the fourth Takbeer the congregation will go into Ruku and the Imam will then complete the Rak'ah as normal.

It is Mustahab (preferred) for the Imam to recite Surah Al-A'la (Chapter 87) in the first Rakaat and Surah Al-Ghashiya (Chapter 88) in the second Rakaat.

It is Sunnah for the Imam to deliver the Khutbah after the Eid prayers.
